Responsibilities

The Assistant Controller will perform financial reporting functions and assist in the fiscal management of operational activities.   

 

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the preparation of the annual operating budget.
  • Analyze and explain budget-versus-actual variations and recommend possible courses of action and prepare forecasts as needed, throughout the year.
  • Manage several funding sources include Federal, State, and County contracts and grants to include internal and external fiscal reporting on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
  • Provide information for the annual financial statement audit and tax filings, including reconciliations, work papers and other supporting financial records for all financial activities; prepare the NYS Sales Tax Return.
  • Provide general ledger accounting and reporting for programs, including balance sheet accounts, income statement accounts, cash reconciliations, monthly journal entries, and payroll; Process financial statements.
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual Consolidated Fiscal Report (CFR).
  • Provide supervision to assigned staff including regular supervision meetings, mentoring, and assisting staff in setting and achieving goals.
  • Recruit, hire and train accounting staff positions as needed.
  • Communicate and work with agency leadership on contract billings, budgets and reports including financial analysis and projections.
  • Maintain agency fixed assets and capital projects.
  • Develop, implement, and/or maintain procedures that ensure compliance with agency policies, government (Federal, State, County) regulations, and several funding sources.
  • Prepare billings and claims for funding sources and ensure collectability of accounts receivable.
  • Code and review disbursements and cash receipts; Review accounts payable list to determine check run.
  • Serve as backup for various accounting functions.
  • Maintain guidelines established by the funding sources and Catholic Charities policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience Required at Entry: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related field with three (3) to five (5) years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. CPA or ability to obtain CPA certification is preferred.

Skills/Abilities: Critical thinking skills. Able and willing to multi-task and embrace change. Self-motivated with effective time management and project management skills. Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (Excel, Office, Outlook, Teams). Effective oral and written communication skills.

 

Licenses/Certificate/Clearances: Valid N.Y.S. Driver’s License.

 

Working Conditions and Environment/Physical Demands: Mobility sufficient to work in an office environment. Manual dexterity sufficient to operate office equipment including adding machines.

 

Required Trainings: VIRTUS, Corporate Compliance, and Confidentiality/HIPAA.
