Responsibilities

The Parent Educator will modify specific patterns of behavior by teaching and coaching, basic living and parenting skills to parents in Catholic Charities Supportive Housing program.  Also monitor and assist families to ensure their safety and basic needs are being met through maintaining housing and access to benefits/income.

 

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Teach, model and coach specific basic living and parenting skills as outlined in the purpose of services; home safety, increased nurturance, appropriate discipline, child development, household management, health, nutrition and building a supportive social network.
  • Interview and counsel clients with problems such as: personal and family adjustments, individuals whose children may be placed in foster care, finances, employment, food, clothing, housing, and physical and mental impairments to determine nature and degree of problem.
  • Provide weekly services to a caseload of 20 families.
  • Maintain appropriate communication with supervisors and other funding sources. Immediately report all safety and risk concerns.
  • Meet with supervisor weekly to discuss case progress, challenges, receive guidance and support.
  • Complete and audit all required written documentation according to program mandates.
  • Offer linkages to community resources and other organizations.
  • Attend and participate in monthly trainings, team meetings and Service Plan Reviews.
  • Maintain guidelines established by the funding sources and Catholic Charities policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience Required at Entry: Associate's degree and 1-3 years of experience providing home-based services with vulnerable families and at-risk children less than 10 years of age, or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Candidates with lived experience are preferred and encouraged to apply.

 

Skills/Abilities: Customer service skills, ability to utilize electronic database system, proficient in MS Office including Outlook, and oral and written communication skills.

 

Licenses/Certification/Clearances: Valid NYS Driver's License, registered and insured vehicle, NYS Child Abuse Registry.

 

Working Conditions and Environment/Physical Demands: Mobility sufficient to drive to and participate in meetings at clients' homes and/or community facilities which may not meet Federal accessibility standards for disabled individuals. Manual dexterity sufficient to work with children/adults in a challenging and active environment.

 

Required Trainings: VIRTUS, Corporate Compliance, Defensive Driving, Mandated Reporter Training.
