The Citizenship/ESOL Teacher will plan and teach citizenship classes for adult refugee students.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

• Create lesson plans and directly teach adults who speak English as a second language, using a comprehensive curriculum to prepare them for the U.S. Citizenship exam.
  Using standardized tools, assess students to determine readiness for the U.S. Citizenship exam.
• Working with the Assimilation Coordinator, incorporate assimilation activities into the lesson plans to assist refugees in adjusting to Syracuse and learning about community resources.
• Network within Catholic Charities and with outside service providers to make appropriate referrals to service the needs of program participants. Promote the program objectives.
• Maintain and update all records in a timely manner to meet guidelines of funding sources.
• Direct and supervise staff and volunteers and provide appropriate guidelines.
  Recruit, screen for eligibility, develop Assimilation Plans, and evaluate program participants.
• Monitor progress of students and make recommendations for appropriate classes.
• Maintain accountability for all participants, assigned staff, and volunteers while in program.
• Act as professional role model for staff and participants. Work as a team with other project staff.
• Maintain guidelines established by the funding sources and Catholic Charities policies and procedures.

Education and/or Experience Required at Entry: TESOL degree and/or TESOL certification from a state licensing agency; and/or minimum of 2 years of experience in TESOL instruction in a classroom setting for a program that has a structured curriculum.

Licenses/Certification/Clearances: Valid NYS Driver's License, State Central Register Clearance.

Working Conditions and Environment/Physical Demands: Mobility sufficient to drive and participate in meeting at client's homes and/or community facilities which may not meet Federal accessibility standards for disabled individuals. Manual dexterity sufficient to work with children/adults in a challenging and active environment.

Required Trainings: VIRTUS, Corporate Compliance, Defensive Driving, Core Updates.
