Responsibilities

The CRPA Peer Recovery Coach will foster an environment of harm reduction while providing hope, encouragement and one to one peer coaching and wellness support to individuals experiencing opioid/ substance use and mental health disorders.  This position will work primarily at Catholic Charities Housing Service Center and respond to requests for service from the Men's Shelter, Emergency Services, Permanent Supportive Housing and other Catholic Charities programs.

 

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Effectively triage referrals and maintain a caseload of 12 journeyers (clients) struggling with or at risk of opioid/substance use and mental health disorders. 
  • Meet with journeyers regularly in the program(s) or at other community locations to develop their personal recovery /wellness goals and coping strategies around their substance use and/ or mental health disorders.
  • Explore and develop opportunities to assist people in discovering their interests and joys, and exploring areas of health & wellness, employment, education, life skills and spirituality to achieve a meaningful life.

An ideal candidate will posess at least 2 years of recovery, strong documentation skills, and will posess (or be willing to posess) CRPA Certification.

Qualifications

Qualifications: Associates degree in Human Services or related field preferred, and 2 years of experience in substance use disorders/addiction, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Lived experience with opioid/substance use disorder and addiction, and recovery in the public mental health and/or substance use treatment systems is required. Candidates must identify as someone in recovery with a minimum of two years of success in his/her personal recovery and wellness.

 

Licenses/Certificate/Clearances: Must have or obtain the state certification for peers - Certified Recovery Peer Advocate (CRPA) at the time of employment, or within one year of commencement of employment. Obtaining the Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) is also preferred. A valid NYS Driver's license and access to reliable transportation is required. State Central Registry Clearance, Staff Exclusion List Screening, and Driving Record Check.

 

Skills/Abilities: Knowledge of peer support and strength based peer practices. Understanding of natural supports. Knowledge of computer systems and computer operations, proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, MS Word and MS Excel. Customer engagement skills. Proficient oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills. Knowledge of mental health services, community resources (service systems). Ability to operate office equipment: fax, copier, scanner, printer, telephone.

 

Working Conditions and Environment/Physical Demands: Mobility sufficient to drive to and participate in meetings at client’s homes and/or community facilities that may not meet Federal accessibility standards for disabled individuals. Manual dexterity sufficient to work with children/adults in a challenging and active environment.
