Responsibilities

The Refugee Youth Worker will plan and implement the daily operations and activities of the Youth Community and Civic Engagement program. Assist Youth Program staff with other activities as needed. Develop, plan and manage two to three monthly service activities for refugee youth focused on giving back to the community and civic service engagement. Develop programs and activities for refugee youth that focus on character education and leadership skills development and incorporate activities in program’s weekly schedule. Create lesson plans using resources that focus on social emotional learning and comprehensive character education, including engaging youth in interesting activities and discussions. Gather information and help clients complete intake forms. Create and submit for approval pre and post surveys for each civic service activity and document progress for quarterly reports. Assist youth program staff with academic support activities such as facilitating communication between schools and families, arranging homework assistance, tutoring, English classes and Regents test preparation to promote academic success of the refugee students. Assist youth program staff in organizing social and educational activities like cooking, art, music, sports, STEM activities and holiday parties. Assist youth program staff in planning field trips and other recreational activities. Communicate with parents regularly about the activities of the program. Act as advocates for the youth and assist families use email, apps, other technology to stay notified of Syracuse City School District communications. Serve as advocate and resource for program, staff, and program participants. Monitor expenses and use of program assets. Establish short and long-term program objectives and ensure grant requirements are met. Insure the maintenance and timely completion of all program statistics and reports. Maintain a clean and safe environment as appropriate. Act as a liaison to all external agencies. Lead in increasing productivity and quality within program. Maintain guidelines established by the funding sources and agency policies and procedures and any other duties as assigned.

 

This is a 35-hour per week position. The candidate must be available to work after school, evenings, and occasional weekends as needed. Pay is $23.00/hour.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience Required at Entry: Associate’s degree in Human Services or related field or two (2) years experience working with individuals who speak English as a new language, refugees, and individuals from diverse backgrounds. Work experience in social or human services in the mainstream community and/or ethnic community. Demonstrated knowledge of the specific ethnic communities. 

 

Licenses/Certificate/Clearances:

  • Valid N.Y.S. Driver's License.
  • Registered and insured vehicle.

 

Skills/Abilities:Must be are aware of their own cultural identity, the cultural identity of the members of the refugee community. Must innately understand values, beliefs and practices of the refugee’s cultural groups.  Ability to utilize electronic database system. Proficiency in MS Outlook, and MS Office. Customer service skills. Oral and written communication skills.

 

Working Conditions and Environment/Physical Demands: Mobility sufficient to drive to and participate in meetings at client’s homes and/or community facilities which may not meet federal accessibility standards for disabled individuals. Manual dexterity sufficient to work with children/adults in a challenging and active environment.
